Cultivating Lettuces

While we were out helping in the school garden recently we came across some lettuce plants that had gone to seed. We wondered if it was possible to collect the seeds and then use them to grow more lettuces.  Katelin annd Rylan have adopted this project. After some research they came up with a plan.

So far they have:

  1. Removed all of the seeds from the lettuce plant
  2. Dried the seeds for a few days.
  3. Replanted the seeds in a tub and placed them in the glass house
  4. Watered them daily.
They are excited to report that many of the lettuce plants have now sprouted.  When they get a little bigger the plan is to separate the plants and resow them in the glasshouse.  Then the girls will look after them until they are ready for us all to eat. If all goes to plan they will be ready to pick for our class camp.  We will keep you updated on our garden project.  Great work girls.

Fitness Fun

We are a very active group of learners and love to get outside for physical activity and games.  In our classroom we have started a fit to learn programme which we do for a minimum of 10 minutes every day.  As part of this we have looked at what being physically active means and the different aspects of fitness such as agility, speed, flexibility etc.

Our focus for the next few weeks is developing agility (changing direction quickly) and speed through playing a variety of tag games.  We are learning to not just run but think on our feet and to change direction quickly to avoid our opponents.

Our favourite tag games so far involve the use of pool noodles or cones.  We especially like to play frozen noodle tag and cone grab.

What are your favourite fitness games?

Life Education Visit

This week we have visited the Life Education Caravan for 3 lessons around making good choices.  We looked at 3 important things that we as human beings should have and show.  They are empathy, self worth and self control.

We also looked at the A, B, C, D decision making model.

A = Admit their is a problem.

B = Brainstorm to generate as many ideas as possible on how to solve the problem

C = Consider each solution.  Is it a win / win for everyone?

D = Decide and Do it

We have used this model in the classroom to look at some of the problems that have come up such as the noise level.  We are certainly getting better at generating ideas and considering each option carefully.

For the Year 8 learners it was also there last visit to the Life Education Caravan so they took the opportunity to say goodbye to Harold.
